My New Job + First Day of Work Outfit Idea | Cotton Cashmere Cat Hair

I have some exciting personal and professional news to share today!!!

Two days ago, I officially started my new job! I mentioned in my Link Love post from a couple of weeks ago that I interviewed for a new position at my current employer. (I also shared a good interview prep podcast in that post if you’re looking for one!) That ended up happening the DAY before Korri and I tested positive for COVID, so I literally had not been in the office between my interview and the first day of my new position (finally tested negative last Friday)! It all happened so quickly!

I got really lucky because I’ve been working there since I graduated with my PhD over five years ago, so I know my group/what we do really well, and they interviewed only one other person because my employer has been struggling to get many people to apply to basically every job listing (to be honest, not many people in my field—meteorology/Earth science in general—are interested in moving to Idaho…and ya know, women here have fewer rights than cattle).

I have a new job!

The biggest difference between my old job and my new job is that now I’m a supervisor. I’ll be supervising three people: one person who has been around since before I started working five years ago and works from home full time, and two people that are yet to be hired (one of the new employees will be filling my old role!). My whole group also switched divisions (something that my old boss spearheaded before he left), but our work won’t change that much.

As of now, my day-to-day doesn’t look any different because I’m still the only weather forecaster, so I’m still primarily doing that every day. On Monday, my official start date, a Boise State student-athlete shadowed me for a couple of hours to see what I do since she is interested in a career in meteorology! It was super fun albeit hectic because it was my first day back in the office in over two weeks, and my computer was acting up, naturally. (I also had to frantically tidy up my desk, haha. AND I had forgotten my phone at home.)

My first major task in my new job is to hire the rest of my team!!! I’m excited and nervous because I have no idea how the process goes, and as I mentioned above, hiring has been tough these days. Honestly, I wasn’t planning on applying for this job at first because being a supervisor scared me the most of all. I didn’t think I was up for the task. But everyone I talked to convinced me to go for it, and since promotions are hard to come by at my office, I decided to apply and here we are. Hopefully I like it, and that my team likes me!

Do you have any tips for being a good manager/suggestions for books or blogs to read and/or podcasts to listen to about being a good manager? I would LOVE to hear them!!! Please drop them in the comments below! ❤️

First Day of Work Outfit Idea

In honor of the first day of my new job, I put together this cozy first day of work outfit idea…if your first day of work also happens to be in fall (or winter)! Even though it’s still technically fall, it’s been feeling a lot more like winter around here. I intended to wear this exact outfit on Monday, but I ended up switching out my topcoat for my warmer puffer because it was so cold in the morning.

I built this outfit from the bottom up: I knew I wanted to wear one of my pairs of the Everlane dream pant (my favorite “non-work pant” work pants) with my slim suede ankle boots because I had a feeling the pants would fit over the top of the boots. And they do! After that, I decided on the camel topcoat because it looks the most sharp out of all of my coat options, and I love mixing shades of brown. After that, I settled on a simple ivory sweater.

There’s just the right amount of contrast happening with the colors and textures. Since it’s cold, a cashmere beanie topped it off just right! I love the additional color introduced by it. Navy and burgundy are two beautiful jewel tones that always look good together.

The end result is a comfy, smart casual outfit perfect for your first day of work! (Or just a regular ol’ work day!)
